Surgery

At Ingersoll Animal Hospital, surgery is a part of our everyday routine. In fact, it’s something we consider ourselves to be experts in. For you and your pet, however, it’s not something you have to deal with very often. Because of this, you may be feeling nervous and a little uncertain. You want to make sure that your loved one will receive the best possible care.

Our experienced team is here to answer your questions, discuss your concerns and set your mind at ease. We offer a full range of surgical services, all of which are delivered in our state of the art surgical suite by our highly skilled doctors. We use the most modern surgical techniques along with the safest, most effective pain relief products to ensure that not only is your companion’s procedure a success, but a positive and stress-free experience for you both.

Our main priority for your pet’s surgery is their safety and comfort – before, during and following the procedure. We begin with pre-anesthetic blood work prior to surgery to help us identify any potential risks that your pet may be prone to. This allows us to plan ahead and minimize these risks as much as possible. Anesthetics are then carefully selected based on your pet’s individual health and surgical needs.

The morning of your pet’s surgery, we’ll welcome you both warmly and immediately focus on getting your loved one settled in. We’ll spend some time helping your pet relax and feel comfortable so that he or she doesn’t experience any unnecessary stress or worry. Once settled, one of our trained technicians will begin to administer the pain control product, all the while rubbing and speaking soothingly to your companion as he or she drifts off into safe, peaceful sedation.

When your pet has been safely anesthetized, the doctor will begin the procedure, working as carefully and efficiently as possible. Support staff will remain on hand throughout the procedure to assist with surgery and to closely monitor your pet’s wellbeing at all times. Our surgical suite is outfitted with cutting edge monitoring equipment which allows us to maintain your pet’s vital signs and keep them comfortable throughout the surgery.

When surgery is complete, your pet will be relocated and continuously monitored in our quiet, comfortable recovery area. Someone from our team will contact you to explain how everything went and to arrange a pick up time for your pet. When you arrive, we’ll go over our post-surgical care instructions, including an appropriate plan for managing your loved one’s pain during the recovery process.

Ingersoll Animal Hospital offers a wide range of surgical services, including:

  • Spay/Neuter
  • Soft Tissue Surgery

Laparoscopic Surgery

The ability to perform procedures in a minimally invasive way improves the patient comfort substantially because it creates less pain and improves the recovery process. Recent studies have shown that patients spayed laparoscopically have less surgical stress and experience up to 65% less postoperative pain. Ingersoll Animal Hospital is pleased to be an advanced surgical hospital that offers less painful and invasive surgical options for your dog or cat.

Rigid laparoscopic surgery is a minimally invasive technique used for viewing the internal structures of the abdomen. Laparoscopic or lap spays, laparoscopic assisted gastropexy (stomach tack) to decrease risk of gastric torsion, and liver biopsies are just some of the many laparoscopic procedures available at Ingersoll Animal Hospital.

How does laparoscopic surgery work?

A laparoscope (camera) is inserted through a small incision in the abdomen. The camera magnifies internal structures of the abdomen and displays them on a TV monitor for a more thorough examination. Additional small incisions are made as needed to facilitate the use of surgical instruments.

When do you use laparoscopy?

The most common application of laparoscopy is for biopsy. In recent years, laparoscopy also has also been adopted as a less traumatic and less painful alternative to traditional spay procedures. We are equipped to do abdominal surgery and biopsies of abdominal organs such as the liver and intestines, as well as cryptorchid (retained testicle) neuters and spays.

What are the advantages of laparoscopic surgery?

  • Smaller incisions
  • Minimally invasive
  • Can be an alternative to major surgery
  • Can be used to determine if surgery is necessary
  • Provides faster recovery
  • Reduces pain for your pet
  • Can help accurately diagnose your pet’s condition so that an appropriate treatment plan can be implemented
