Things You Learn When You Adopt A Cat

June 1, 2023
It’s Adopt A Cat Month! Cats may very well be the purrfect pets: they’re not only really cute, they’re also charismatic and lots of fun. As it turns out, adopting kitties can also be quite educational. A Des Moines, IA vet lists a few things you may find in the coming months below.

Fluffy Isn’t Like Your Last Cat

One thing we can say for sure about our feline pals? They’re all unique individuals. Sure, Fluffy and Mittens may have a lot in common, but they also have some very unique purrsonalities, and can have very, very different tastes. For instance, you may find that your new pet completely ignores your plants, while your last kitty wanted to destroy them. (Note: be sure to remove toxic plants before bringing your furry friend home.) Or, you may discover that your furball will unabashedly steal your donut, even though your last kitty showed no interest in sweets. Getting to know your new pet’s quirks is part of the fun of adopting a new kitty!

Cats Can Absolutely Melt Hearts

Don’t be surprised if you find yourself completely smitten with your furry pal, and most likely sooner rather than later. It can be a really powerful moment when Fluffy looks up at you with that adoring expression in her eyes, or hops into your lap for snuggles. In fact, snuggling with your furry pal releases a special hormone in both of you. This hormone, oxytocin, reinforces feelings of love, comfort, and contentment … just as cats themselves do.

Kitties Are Hilarious

Fluffy has many wonderful traits. She’s cute, clean, cuddly, and affectionate. She’s also an adorable comedian. Don’t be surprised if you find yourself chuckling at your new feline buddy’s antics as soon as you get her home. That’s part of the joy of having a cat: they just have a way of turning our houses into homes, and keeping us smiling.

Our Feline Overlords Can Be Bossy

Don’t be surprised if your furry little friend has you wrapped around her little paws by the end of her first week in your home. It can be hard to resist those plaintive meows and those adorable requests for playtime or cuddles! One of the first things you’ll want to do is schedule an appointment with us, your Des Moines, IA veterinarians. We love meeting new patients!
