Tips For Adopting A Senior Dog

November 1, 2022
November is Adopt A Senior Pet Month! Older animals often have a difficult time getting adopted, as so many people prefer puppies and kittens. We know, baby animals are adorable, and there is a lot to be said for raising your furry best friend yourself. However, senior pets also have some wonderful qualities: they’re quieter, calmer, less destructive, and already trained. Plus, they really need the love! A Des Moines, IA vet discusses adopting a senior dog below.

Be Prepared To Commit

It’s important to be realistic about your canine buddy’s needs, as well as your own expectations. You’ll need to be diligent about keeping up with veterinary care, and be prepared to handle any medical issues that may arise. For instance, Fido may develop hip dysplasia, or perhaps have issues with his sight or hearing. Make sure you’re ready to stay the course! It would be extremely sad—and traumatic—for an older pooch to get adopted, only to end up being rehomed or surrendered.

Provide Little Luxuries

One of the best things about older dogs is the fact that they’re usually very calm. Your canine companion will spend most of his time napping, and likely won’t be too interested in digging up the yard or chasing the neighbor’s cat. Care-wise, you’ll want to focus care on keeping your furry friend comfy. That means soft beds, a proper diet, and, of course, lots of love. Fido may also be more comfortable being bathed at a groomer’s, rather than lifted in and out of a tub. Ask your vet for specific advice.

Enjoy The Moment

Whenever you adopt an animal, you’re signing on for a lifetime commitment. With a senior dog, that commitment is much shorter than it would be with a puppy. That’s actually both a blessing and a curse. It can be a good thing for those who aren’t sure where life will take them in 5 or 10 years. However, you may not have much time with Fido. That just makes it even more important for you to savor the time you and your furry pal do have together. Senior pets are often extremely sweet and cuddly, and they really can melt your heart.
