Fido’s Grooming Appointments

February 15, 2021
Have you been considering taking Fido to the groomer? While many processes are different now, because of Covid, our canine buddies do still need some help with their beauty routines. A Des Moines, IA vet discusses taking your dog to the salon in this article.

Frequency

How often your pet comes in will depend on the thickness, lengthy, and type of his fur, and how you have it cut. Some pups, such as Bichons, will need to come in every 4-6 weeks. You can wait a bit longer if you’ve gotten Fido a short cut. Pups with shorter fur can usually wait 2 to 3 months between appointments.

Styling Options

Fido can wear a variety of cute styles. If you have a specific haircut in mind, you’ll want to discuss them with your groomer. It will help to bring photos of the desired style. Of course, many of these special cuts, including some of the breed standard ones, will require more maintenance than a plain clip would. That’s also something you’d want to consider when making a decision.

Mats

Matted fur isn’t just unsightly. It can cause many different issues with Fido’s skin, and can also make him more susceptible to parasites and skin infections. Severe matting usually means that a shave is needed, but if your pooch only has a few mats, the groomer may be able to remove them without clipping his full coat. Needless to say, if your dog’s fur is prone to mats, regular grooming is a must.

Shampoos

Dog shampoos are not one-brand-fits-all. Some pooches may need special products, such as medicated or hypoallergenic shampoos. Or, you may find that heavily perfumed shampoos are too much for you or Fido, or both of you. This is something you’d want to discuss with both your vet and groomer.

Medical Grooming

Some of our four-legged friends require medical grooming, such as anal gland expression or ear hair trims. Ask your vet for specific advice on this.

Coming Home

One of the best things about having Fido groomed? Being able to cuddle with a clean, fresh smelling dog! Enjoy those snuggles with your furry best friend. You may also want to get that tail wagging by offering your pup a special treat or a new toy. Do you want to schedule grooming for your canine companion?
