Hug Your Cat Day

May 15, 2020

May 30th is International Hug Your Cat Day! It’s pretty cute to think of kitties all over the world enjoying extra snuggles. Our feline pals are very loving and affectionate, and definitely deserve lots of hugs! A Des Moines, IA vet discusses hugging Fluffy in this article.

Benefits Of Hugging Cats

You don’t really need a reason to hug cats: they’re so cute that it’s often hard to resist hugging them. However, hugging your furball does have some benefits. It’s very soothing, which is good for you mentally, physically, and emotionally. It’s also a great way to make Fluffy feel loved, and strengthen the bond between you.

Proper Kitty Hugging Techniques

There are a few things to keep in mind when it comes to hugging cats. First and foremost, let your feline buddy decide if and when she wants to snuggle. When Fluffy is in cuddle mode, be sure to support her properly, so that her rump or legs are holding her weight. Also, be very gentle when putting your kitty down! Don’t let go until all four paws are on the ground.

What Not To Do

Never force attention on a kitty that doesn’t want to be held or petted. That’s a huge no-no! For one thing, cats are very small, and can feel threatened quite easily if they’re being held against their will. Fluffy is also quite particular about when and how you are allowed to pet her, and for how long. If your furry pal isn’t feeling very cuddly, just let her go.

Cats That Don’t Like Hugs

Some kitties just don’t really care for being held or petted every much. That’s purrfectly fine! Fluffy may prefer to show her affection just by hanging out with you. Toys, treats, catnip, and playtime will get that little motor going!

Cats That Really Need Hugs

Not every kitty has a human willing to offer cuddles and love on demand. There are far too many sweet, lovable pets in shelters, just hoping someone will adopt them and offer them love, food, and lap space. If you aren’t ready to adopt another furball, consider helping homeless cats by making donations to animal charities. Or, if you want to go a step further, you can look into volunteering or even fostering.
