To-Do List for Boarding Your Dog

April 1, 2019
Are you going to be boarding your dog soon? Whether you’re leaving town, undergoing medical procedure, or having a major life event, such as giving birth or getting married, there are times when you’ll need to send Fido to a doggy hotel. Here, a Des Moines, IA vet offers tips on getting ready to board your pooch.

Pack

Before putting Fido’s suitcase together, contact the kennel and find out what you should and shouldn’t bring. Some kennels allow you to bring bedding and toys from home, while others prefer to use their own things.

Do Some Research

Choosing a good kennel isn’t always easy. Ask your vet for recommendations. You can also check with friends, family, and co-workers.

Set Up A Schedule

Find out what your pup’s schedule will be for meals, walks, and playtime while he’s staying at his doggy hotel. If it’s significantly different from what you do at home, start making adjustments a few weeks in advance.

Provide Records

Any reputable kennel will request copies of your dog’s vaccinations, registration, and medical records. Don’t take Fido to any place that doesn’t ask for this paperwork! (Note: if you board with your vet, they will likely have this information already.)

Offer Contact Information

Make sure that the kennel has the correct contact information for you. We recommend providing a backup contact, especially if you will be unavailable.

Ask Questions

Every kennel is a bit different, so it’s important to know how Fido’s doggy hotel works. For example, find out whether the kennel will contact you with minor questions, or only in case of an emergency.

Give Written Instructions

All of our canine pals are unique. Provide any specific care instructions in writing. For example, if your pooch is terrified of thunderstorms, or allergic to wheat, the kennel will definitely need to know.

Inquire About Extras

Many kennels offer some great perks and extras. You may be able to have Fido groomed while you are away. It’s always great to pick up a fresh, clean, pup!

Relax

Once you’ve dropped your canine buddy off at the pet resort, you can now relax and focus on upcoming events or trips. Your furry best friend is in great hands! Do you need to board your dog? Please feel free to contact us, your local Des Moines, IA vet clinic, anytime. We are here to help!
