6 Things To Remember When Boarding Your Dog

September 15, 2018
Are you going to be taking your canine pal to a doggy hotel soon? Fido is an important part of our lives, but sometimes it is necessary to board him. In this article, a local Des Moines, IA vet offers tips on boarding your pooch.

Pay Attention To Paperwork

You may have to fill out some forms for the kennel, especially if your furry friend hasn’t been there before. Read the paperwork closely, and make sure you understand the kennel’s policies and procedures. For instance, you may need to note whether you want to be contacted for minor questions, or only in case of an emergency.

Avoid Dietary Changes

Man’s Best Friend has a bit of a sensitive stomach. Fido often gets tummy upsets when something disrupts his usual doggy routines. Dietary changes can also cause issues. If possible, bring your pup’s regular food to the kennel. Add a few extra days’ worth, just in case you are delayed.

Pack Carefully

Kennels all have their own policies on what you can and can’t bring for your canine friend. We know, Fido may be more comfortable in his own bed. However, some kennels prefer to use their own bedding, in part because it reduces the risk of fleas. Find out what you can bring for your furry buddy.

Keep Up With Vaccines

It’s standard procedure for kennels to request copies of your pet’s vaccinations. (Note: if you are boarding with your vet, they may already have these records.) Make sure that your furry pal is up-to-date on important vaccinations, like rabies and distemper. Check your pup’s records, and make sure that he won’t be due for vaccinations around the time he will be in the kennel.

Don’t Drag Out The Goodbyes

It’s never easy to say goodbye to your furry best friend. However, when it comes to boarding, a short and sweet farewell is definitely a better option than a prolonged one. The longer it takes to say goodbye, the harder it will be for both you and your beloved pet.

Offer Written Notes

If your dog has specific care needs, such as allergies or medications, write these out clearly. You’ll also want to verify that the kennel understands Fido’s needs. Please contact us, your Des Moines, IA vet clinic, for your dog’s boarding, grooming, and veterinary care needs. We’re here to help!
