Tips for Boarding Your Dog

March 15, 2018
Are you going to be leaving town soon? If so, you may be considering putting your canine pal in a kennel while you are away. People also often board their dogs before major events, such as weddings; medical procedures; during home renovations; and on moving day. It can be a huge relief to know that your furry best friend is in great hands while you are occupied elsewhere! Here, a Des Moines, IA vet offers some tips on boarding Fido.

Pack Wisely

Kennels all have their own policies about what you can and can’t bring for your pup. Some places allow you to bring toys, treats, and bedding from home, while others prefer to use their own things. Check with the kennel before getting Fido’s bag ready. If you can bring food and treats, pack a bit extra, just to be on the safe side.

Ask Questions

Don’t be afraid to ask questions! You’ll want to find out if the kennel will contact you with minor questions, or only in the event of emergencies. You may also be able to order helpful extras, such as grooming.

Short Drop-off

We know, it’s hard to say goodbye to that furry face, but prolonged farewells will only make things harder for both you and Fido. Keep your goodbyes short and sweet.

Trial Run

Before going on a long trip, bring Fido to his doggy hotel for a shorter stay, such as an overnight visit. That way, your pup will already be familiar with his hotel.

Double Check The Schedule

Remember to look over the kennel’s schedule, as well as their drop off and pickup times. You don’t want to find out at the last minute that you can’t drop Fido off on the way to the airport! Also, ask about the kennel’s day-to-day schedule for meals, walks, and playtime. If it’s very different from what your furry friend is used to, start making adjustments the week before.

Instructions

If your pooch has any special care instructions, such as allergies, put them in written form. Use clear, language. The kennel staff may not have to know that Fido once ate your cousin’s sock, but they should be told that he is frightened of thunderstorms. Do you need to board your pup?
